On Being Organized

I told my college roommates once that I was getting more organized. They laughed at me.
I don’t know what they could see in a college student that made them think I was SO unorganized, but I guess I had farther to go than I thought.

If I were to try that line on anyone who knows me now, they would laugh too.

Personally, I think being organized is overrated. I also think it's misunderstood.
I have a sister who everyone, including herself, thinks is very organized. But if you open her linen closet, watch out! Some people are organized at work but not at home; some organize their spices but not their bills. I think everyone is organized about the things that matter to them, which isn't every thing. Not everyone organizes their Hard Rock shirts alphabetically.

Besides, it really boils down to where you get your energy. People we call "organized" get their energy from organizing things, and their energy is drained when there is chaos. People who are "disorganized" can live with the mess, but are drained by organizing things. That's me.

So today, in light of my new year's resolution to clean my house up a bit, I worked on some piles. Now I'm exhausted and must rest.
If you saw how little I actually got done, that I never got to the bottom to clean underneath, and where I put the mess, you would really have yourself a good laugh.

So go ahead and laugh. I'm going to bed.

P.S. Have you looked in your junk drawer lately?

It makes me twitchy to think of you in a mess, but if that doesn't drain you then all is well. I cannot handle chaos and major messes. I let some things pile up a bit but then I enjoy the organizing process to take care of them and that energizes me. (It's an interesting way of looking at things.)

I don't understand Jill. I'm with you, Mom. Just the process of organizing is exhausting to me.

OH, I KNOW you side with Mom sweet sister, Elizabeth! I had to share a room with you! I will give you that people are organized about different things depending on what is important to them, but that productivity can happen in clutter or chaos? This organization fan is doubtful! (Now, if I could get Jill's cleaning passion- I'd be set! The organization I love! The bathrooms, not so much!)

Organization... what a foreign topic. No, I don't feel drained by organizing, but for me it's more of a trip down memory lane. I am a pack-rat (like my mother) and so clearing away stuff is a long drawn out process which usually ends with me laughing at myself and the pile bigger than the box I pulled it out of. Good times!
