A Trip to the Dentist

I went to the dentist today.
I'm one of those weird ones that almost likes going to the dentist.

Before they took my x-rays, they took my blood pressure.
It was very low.
They were very surprised.
Most people's blood pressure rises at the dentist's.
Not mine.
The dentist chair is my place to nap.

I didn't go to the dentist for many years because I couldn't get away from my children.
Then I figured out it was one of the few places I could go without them.
It is also one of the few places I could stop moving and just sit.
So I was glad to go to the dentist and get a nap.

One of my dentists was named Dr. Rough. OK, it was Ruff.
Sure, sometimes the dentist hurts, or it's really uncomfortable.
But while they're scraping, digging, pulling, cutting, poking, pushing, and spraying, I just think of all the good they're doing.
And if it hurts (which Dr. Ruff never did), I just push my thumbs together.

They gave me that funny gas once, but I told them never to do that again. I didn't need it to calm me--I was already falling asleep--and I can't stand not being in control.

I've had fillings, root canals, crowns, bridges and oral surgery--twice.
When I come out of the dentist, I may be puffy and swollen and sore.
But I know my teeth are clean, and fixed, and they won't hurt for awhile.
And I got my nap.
What's so bad about that?

That's an interesting perspective on the dentist. I don't think I've ever napped while someone was poking and scrapping, and had their fingers in my mouth. I'm way overdue for an appointment so perhaps I should just schedule it and think of it as a chance to be alone.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to find a new dentist. But I agree about the whole nap thing. I've never actually fallen asleep, but I do get a little rest when I go!

Weird-O! It's the pushing, pulling, scraping, cutting, spraying, sucking that's bad about that! My whole body tenses up and I cringe at just about every movement. I have to admit, I do look forward to seeing my reflection in the dentist's glasses. There is something truly remarkable (and revolting) about watching someone putting a drill in your mouth intending you bleed. Strange craft dentistry is...

I JUST got back from the dentist! I broke a tooth. Turns out, it was a weak corner next to a filling and it just snapped off so, the good news is I don't need a root canal (I have had three already) but I do need a crown (I have had three of those too). But they can't do the crown until I get my two bottom wisdom teeth pulled. So, in three weeks I will return to the dentist and pay him $1000 (that I don't have!) to fix my mouth. Once I get past the cost of the dentist (and the smell!) I too enjoy the time alone to just sit with no kids crawling on me, pulling my hair, screaming for my attention. I can't sleep but without kids pulling on me, it's almost as good as one! :)

I have always loved going to the dentist and it's nice to know that there are others out there that also enjoy the experience.
